01/04/2015, Klaus Maurer (Hamburg Fire Department), on "United Nations Disaster and Coordination Team"

 Abstract

After natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and hurricanes there are not only dead and injured people. Often the infrastructure is damaged and the basic life support is not available. The task of the UNDAC team is to be part of the first foreign assistance in the crisis area to explore the requirements and to support local governments to coordinate the international assistance.

Biography

Maurer, Director of the Hamburg Fire Department, is one of about 170 worldwide active UNDAC members. In a crisis, within twelve to 24 hours, the team should be on site and get an overview of the situation. The core work is to identify the acute needs and to coordinate international relief teams and items, so that the population and the affected area will be supplied adequately. Klaus Maurer also speaks about aspects of disaster prevention and cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organizations.
